“The younger someone is when they first try alcohol or drugs, the more likely they are to develop addictions later, prevention experts say.

That’s why Longmeadow’s CLOSE Community Coalition has been working with the town’s public schools on prevention efforts among younger students. The effort includes teaching life skills in social and emotional learning, such stress-relieving techniques….”  To continue reading…

A little education on our approach to prevention…

Piece by piece, we’d like to introduce you to the elements of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) and how each relates to environmental approaches. CLOSE Community utilizes the SPF to develop the infrastructure needed for community‐based, public health approaches that can lead to effective and sustainable reductions in alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use and abuse. First, let’s look at Assessment and the strategies we’ve been committing to as the coalition grows.

Assessment

  1. Collecting quantitative (School Climate Surveys) and qualitative (focus groups/key stakeholder interviews/listening sessions) data to define and describe the community of Longmeadow and its problems
  2. Collecting data on the needs of Longmeadow families and youth, our resources to respond to those needs, and the gaps in resources
  3. Conducting a Problem Analysis for each substance we focus on: youth alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and opioid use, misuse, or abuse
  4. Creating a Logic Model for our two priority substances: Binge Alcohol Use/Vaping
  5. Gaging community readiness to address needs and gaps
  6. Updating our Community Assessment as needed

What we’ve been up to…

CLOSE is excited to support our LPS Middle School Health and Wellness Teachers in getting trained to implement the gold standard in evidence-based youth substance abuse prevention education curricula for all Longmeadow 6-8th graders starting this fall. Botvin’s Lifeskills focuses not just on particular substances, but building resiliency, refusal, self-soothing, stress-management and positive peer support skills. Thank you to LPS for your continued commitment to helping Longmeadow youth grow into healthy, wise, and safe young adults!  For more info on Botvin Lifeskills.

Our second LHS Social Norms Campaign poster that went up at the end of the school year. LHS 12th grade binge drinking rates are higher than state and national averages so we wanted to spread the word that MOST LHS students do NOT binge drink. When more students know the reality of these peer behaviors, they are less likely to engage in these unhealthy behaviors to begin with. To learn more about social norms campaigns, visit the Montana Institute’s website.
